Heidnik was graded as “excellent” by his instructors during basic training but applications for a number of specialist postings were rejected. He was eventually posted to San Antonio, Texas to be trained as a medic. Here Heidnik developed a thriving business, lending money to other soldiers. With his training completed he was posted to West Germany.

While based overseas, Heidnik gained his high school diploma, scoring 96%. Things seemed to be on the up for him, but in late August 1962 he was struck by a mystery ailment. Heidnik reported to the sick bay complaining of dizziness, blurred vision and nausea. A neurologist determined that Heidnik displayed the symptoms of a mental illness. Within weeks, he was sent back to the States. Three months later he received an honorable discharge on medical grounds. The official diagnosis was “schizoid personality disorder.”
